The Northern Nevada Literacy Council (NNLC) is a community-based 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization located in a low-income neighborhood of Northeast Reno. Our mission is to help low-income, low-literacy adult learners achieve their literacy and educational goals so they can be productive family and community members. NNLC has served the Northern Nevada community since 1978. Over the past 40 years, NNLC has provided more than 17,500 adult learners with classroom instruction and tutoring services to support their pursuit of a Certificate for High School Equivalency, or HSE(formerly known only as the GED). NNLC has provided 20,000 foreign-born adults with English as a Second Language and Citizenship classes. This year, NNLC will educate more than 1,000 low-income adult learners with low literacy skills, more than 50% of whom are Hispanic English Language Learners. NNLC is recognized by the Nevada Department of Education as a vital organization that is very successful in educating "the hardest to serve." NNLC has achieved outstanding educational outcomes and results, meeting the Better Business Bureau's Wise Giving Alliance standards for nonprofits. Each year, NNLC experiences increases in adults graduating with the HSE certificate and then advancing to college, a trade, or a higher paying job. NNLC staff is recognized as education experts who successfully help adults with limited language skills and low proficiency levels achieve results beyond their expectations.
